Re-creation of reality
By Wim van der Beek
Evert Thielen's oeuvre is extensive: epic polyptychs, contemporary portraits and genre pieces, landscapes and paintings with animals. With his polyptychs, in which he combines old painting techniques with contemporary imagery, Evert Thielen has commanded much admiration. But his paintings also deserve attention. In his genre pieces and portraits, the boundaries between autonomous painting and commissioned work are blurred. In the portrait commissions he has carried out so far, he constantly maneuvers between freedom and bondage. His genre pieces are contemporary in every way. The painter chooses angles that reflect modern life, and at the same time his approach, method and choice of subject matter closely match the work of seventeenth-century genre painters.
'Evert Thielen - Recreating Reality' introduces readers to the life and work of Evert Thielen.
